Members Meeting

8.00pm Wednesday 27th November
Ruislip Manor Sports & Social Club.

Terry Gibson

Some of you will know that Terry Gibson has not been well of late, a few weeks ago he was rushed into hospital complaining of difficulty in breathing and struggling to do normal everyday things. His stay in hospital revealed that his heart was only working at 50% capacity and he had an irregular hear rhythm. The hospital was greatly concerned for his health. He has now been stabilised but has great difficulty walking and is suffering from very bad circulation especially in his legs. I was concerned that the strain the membership job would put on him and his wife Jill, not just at this time but in the coming season. I did not want him or Jill worrying about the membership when the prime consideration is that Terry should get better. Terry has done sterling work for the club in the job that is without a doubt the most thankless and arduous the club has. Terry has agreed to step down from the Membership Secretaries job. The Committee has agreed that Paul Kempthorne fill the job until the AGM where all the Officers positions will be filled. The Committee would like to thank Terry for all his work for the Society over the years and although there are those that would sometimes moan about his approach, few if any of those were prepared to take on the mantel. In recognition of his work on behalf of the Society the Committee will be proposing that Terry be awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Society at the AGM. I'm sure you will join with me in wishing Terry 'Get well soon'

Paul Collyer

As you will remember the Society bestowed Honorary Life Membership on Paul at last years AGM, here is a letter from Paul:

Dear Terry,
Thank you for your letter, I very much appreciate the Honorary Life Membership, a very kind thought indeed. I have joined the Lostwethiel Anglers and am enjoying the Seatrout fishing in the river Fawey. I have yet to see a Salmon. I understand December is the best time for the main run. Please give my regards to John Miles. Next time I visit Iver I will bring a "Rod and Line". My thanks to all the members.
Kindest regards
Paul Collyer

On the Web

The site is now over a year old and the response has been terrific, I've had e-mails from people seeing the site and wanting more information, and lots from potential new members. The response to the e-fish report facility has been extremely popular and currently stands at over 200 for the season so far. The message board is also showing good signs of interest. So for all the information you could ever wish to have on the Society along with up to the minute news please visit our website at http://www.harrowangling.co.uk/

DO'S & DON'TS

The following list is not exhaustive, and follow-up will be issued. I would ask that you do take time to read through your rule book. Rules are important to running a successful Society in protecting our fish and creating a harmonious relationship between members. Breaking the rules could cause expulsion from the club, something that the Committee would always want to avoid.

DO

carry your membership card with you, and have a car sticker displayed.
use barbless hooks, knotless nets and lead-free weights.
use a unhooking mat, careless handing and subsequent damage to fish should be unacceptable to any angler.
avoid using a keepnet whenever possible.
advise the Fishery manager if you are unable to retrieve tackle from a tree.
avoid excessive noise
be courteous to other water users.

DO NOT

use more than two rods, and have an appropriate National Rod Licence(s).
use carp sacks.
use multi rigs except for pike fishing.
use Quicksilver.
prebait swims.
use marker floats on No2, if there are boats are in the area.
take dogs on the waters. Only bailiffs are allowed this privilege.

LEAVE RUBBISH BEHIND

Our Fishery Managers give a lot of their time unpaid to maintaining the access and tidiness around our waters. The results are a tribute to their unselfish work. There is nothing worse than having to collect up sacks of rubbish left by the uncaring. An angler caught flouting this rule, faces expulsion and no money back! If you do not understand any of the rules, why not raise your queries at our next meeting or ask a member of your committee, whose names are in every edition of the Magazine/Newsletter. General Rules "A main object of the Society is to cultivate principles of fair angling and sportsmanlike conduct. Where possible the Committee avoids writing restrictive rules stating specifically what one should and should not do at the waters, preferring to rely on members proper interpretation of good practice. Unfortunately. recent conflicts on the lakes threatens to change that philosophy if common sense does not prevail. I refer to the practice of long casting, either to the opposite bank or at angles from a swim, restricting the use of adjacent swims. Providing the other swims are not in use there is no problem. However, should another member turn up to fish one of those swims, the angler should withdraw his tackle well away from that water without being requested. No member has the right to sit in one swim and restrict access to others by this action."

Curators Report

Just a few lines regarding fish reports. I have received a good number of reports this year all from the email facility and mainly from half a dozen or so members. I am sure there are more people out there who are fishing so please do send in reports via the post as well, remember there is a draw at the end of the season for a free membership based on the reports that I receive. For those of you that do send in reports via email could you enter the number of fish you catch and their weights in the comments section. Could anyone who has a club trophy ensure that it is returned to either myself or the Fisherman's Cabin by the 10th March so as allow time for engraving to be done.

Fishery Management Harefield No2

The closed season working parties saw the same old faces turn up for some graft (except Andy). Jobs included; shoring up railway bank swims with sandbags due to boat erosion, swims along the canal bank being gravelled to stop a certain angler who to churns up the mud, and swims tidied up. Season started with a bang, what with the world cup and 8 Carp in the first week (honest) best being 24lb. As the weeks went by the lake started to weed up very badly. This put a lot of people off. Those who persevered got the results. List of fish so far as I know: 35+ Carp between 12-14 & 30-4, plenty of double figured Bream to 12-3, Tench to 6+, Perch to 2-8, plus a few Pike on boilies. Top rod Hambo with 19 fish so far, he is even willing to give advice if required, contact him on www.toprod.co.uk! Loads of rumours about big fish coming out, someone contacted me about it from Bombay, all I can say is come and fish the lake and see for yourself. Finally two problems: we have a phantom dumper, half way down the canal bank behind the ivy, you know who you are, use your loaf and burn your paper so the public and we can't see it at least, and bury the rest. The other problem is fly tippers usually around the workings area. If you see anyone, take a note of there reg number and we will see if it is a member or not. The car park in Dews Farm is currently being gravelled, if you go down there try and park your car so its not on the track. That's it for now, but remember fishing is for fun.

Fishery Management - Harefield No1

We would like to start by thanking the members who attended the work parties at the beginning of the season. As you can see your efforts at these work parties have made great improvements to the overall look of the lake. This season has seen an improvement in the fishing with many double figure Carp being reported averaging around 17lb. Also a lot of Tench around 4-8 & 6lb Bream have been caught in abundance with acceptable catches of Roach Rudd & perch. The shallow end of the lake was heavily weeded this year. We believe that the pollarding of the trees have improved the growth of the lily pads along the right hand side of the lake. We would also like to strongly advise our members to venture further into the bushes to go to the loo in future. We have found on several occasions very unpleasant surprises just inside the bushes & even on our pathways. Please either bury or carefully set light to your toilet paper following its use. Look forward to seeing you all at the next members meeting & the forthcoming work parties.

Fishery Management - Rowley Lake

The lake has fished extremely well this year and we have had over three times the amount of fish reports from Rowley than the other lakes. There were early complaints regarding the treatment of the lilies as there always is but towards the latter part of the summer they began to show again much to members relief. This is an ongoing process to maintain the balance. I was staggered at the amount of Tench reports this year with a lake record of 7-4, another seven and lots of other very good fish. The Bream have also been very much in evidence with some very big bags. Plenty of Carp reported from the lake with some good fish reported to 23-12. We have received no reports of other species which is a shame, maybe as the Pike season continues to develop this will change. Or even if you have not reported a capture you made earlier in the year, we would still welcome it now. We are particularly interested in any reports no matter how small of captures of Crucian Carp.
